My name is Reda Smaili, and I recently had the opportunity to spend time in Leiden, an experience that left a lasting impression on me both personally and professionally. I am someone who values connection, cultural exchange, and the small moments that build meaningful relationships.

One of my most memorable experiences in Leiden was celebrating my birthday with my professor, Nadia, and her family. We shared ice cream together, and while it may seem like a simple gesture, it was incredibly special to me. That moment helped me feel truly welcomed and appreciated, and it deepened the bond I had with my professor and colleagues. It created a sense of belonging that translated into a more collaborative and efficient working environment.

What stayed with me the most from my time in the Netherlands was the bike culture. It was not just a mode of transportation —it was a way of life. The freedom, the rhythm of the city, and the sense of community that came with cycling everywhere left a deep impression on me. It made me reflect on how lifestyle and environment can shape our daily experiences and well-being.

While I didn’t face a single defining “saddest” moment, the most difficult part was saying goodbye. Leaving behind the people, the routines, and the city that had become a second home was emotionally challenging. But even in that, I found gratitude —for the memories, the growth, and the connections that will stay with me forever.
