About us

‘Living on the Other Side’ is a research project that asks how people from West-and Central Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia build their lives in Morocco –with or without formal residency papers. The focus? How they deal with life’s big moments: marriage, birth, and death.

What does it mean to pursue an academic career as a woman? How does this professional choice intersect with the desire to start a family? And in what ways does gender shape the experience of doing fieldwork, especially in an international setting?

These are some of the key questions explored in a candid group conversation as we reflect on our personal journeys as researchers and women.

In this conversation, we discuss how gender influences both the way we conduct research and how we are perceived within academia. The discussion goes beyond gender alone. Issues such as class, age, and country of origin also come into play, highlighting how multiple aspects of identity shape our roles and realities within academia.

We examine how these factors affect everything from day-to-day interactions with colleagues to building trust and gaining access during fieldwork. The result is a personal exploration of what it means to find—and hold—one’s place in the academic world as a woman.
