Expecting disaster? Design with flexibility
Research design sounds clean on paper: interviews, clear timelines, tested tools. But when it comes to practice, especially online, messiness takes the lead.
The weight of small obstacles
I am at the point where the first conversations and interviews are about to begin. My design is 90% ready and all is left is a matter of tweaking and adapting to each respondent. I learned that that is easier said than done.
In the video below, I reflect on the clumsy, uncertain beginnings of remote research.
Was it really that bad?
In the following video, I share how the first language lessons went. All the disruptions shape how I approach the research. Designing online fieldwork or remote research is not about finding the perfect tools and having the smoothest interviews. It is about being prepared yet staying flexible and patient when things do not go as expected.
