Sleepless with data and impressions

Just a few days into the field, and my head is already buzzing with impressions. What do you do with all this data? Wait until you're back home to start analysing? Sometimes, that decision gets made for you. The lines between gathering and analysis start to blur—ready or not.

In search of sleep and rest

After the border, I head back toward the interior of the country. Meknes is not far from that small town in the Middle Atlas Mountains where I did fieldwork before. I look forward to seeing our old childminder again tomorrow, breathing in the crisp mountain air, and giving my brain a chance to cool down. I’m overwhelmed with impressions, with data. I long for sleep, but it keeps slipping away. Analysis arrives uninvited, far ahead of schedule, interrupting the rest I thought I’d have in this beautiful riad tucked away in the medina of Meknes.
